What is involved in tooth whitening procedure?
Tooth whitening can be a very effective way to lighten the natural colour of your teeth, without removing any of the tooth surface. It cannot make a complete colour change but may lighten the existing shade.
Who can perform tooth whitening?
Tooth whitening is a form of dentistry and should only be carried out by a dentist or another regulated dental professional.
What happens during tooth whitening at the dentist?
Your dentist will be able to tell you if you are suitable for tooth whitening. Tooth whitening can only lighten your existing tooth colour. It also only works on natural teeth. It will not work on any types of dentures, crown, veneers or white filling.
The dentist will take an impression of your teeth to make a mouth guard and will instruct you how to use the bleaching gel. Then, using the mouth guard at home you regularly apply the gel for a specified period of time over two to four weeks.
How long will my teeth stay white?
The effects can last for a few months to up to three year. This varies from person to person. The effects won’t last as long if you smoke or drink red wine, tea or coffee which stain your teeth.
The mouth guard which is supplied can be kept, and more gel can be purchased to top up the whitening effect.
What are the side effects?
Some people may find their teeth become sensitive to cold during the treatment. Others may have discomfort in the gums, a sore throat or white patches along the gum line. These symptoms are normally temporary and should disappear within a few days of the treatment finishing.
How can I look after my teeth once they have been whitened?
You can help to keep your teeth white by cutting down on the amount of food and drink you have that stain teeth. Don’t forget, smoking can also help prevent discolouration and staining.
Regular visits to the hygienist will still remove calculus (tartar) and other stains.
